Warren is a 3rd year Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow for Global Perspectives on Society at NYU Shanghai. He received his PhD in history from the University of Oxford and also holds and MPhil from Oxford’s Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies. Originally from South East London, he lived and worked in Tokyo for 14 years. Warren speaks fluent Japanese, holds a HSK 5 level certificate in Mandarin Chinese (2021), and TOPIK I-Level 2 certificate in Korean (2025). He received a BA in liberal arts at ICU, Tokyo. Prior to NYU Shanghai, he was a Lecturer at Rikkyo University’s Global Liberal Arts Program, Visiting Researcher at Keio University, and a Project Manager at the Tokyo-based think tank, Asia Pacific Initiative.

Warren is interested in how global cultural flows across national borders shape emotions, identities and popular culture. In particular, employing transnational approaches to modern and contemporary society, his work explores forces of globalization from below. Focusing on media and the politics of popular culture, Warren specializes in research that examines Japan’s transnational connectivity with East Asia and the wider world. His doctoral dissertation looked at transmedia networks of subversive humor and laughter in late nineteenth century Japan. He also published the prize-winning journal article, “From Cool Japan to Cold Japan: Grime Cyborgs in Black Britain” Japan Forum, which was awarded the 2022 Ian Nish Prize for the best article by the British Association for Japanese Studies.
