Kathleen Burke

Kathleen Burke is a doctoral candidate in History and Food Studies at the University of Toronto. She has a Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honours) from the University of Queensland and a Master of History from Humboldt Universität-zu Berlin/King’s College London. Her present research looks at the entanglements between gender, mobility and food in colonial port cities of the Dutch Indian Ocean Empire, where she aims to bridge historiographical gaps between global history, on the one hand, and gender and food history, on the other. She is the recipient of the Connaught International Fellowship and is grateful for the many institutions which have helped fund her research in archives in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands and Germany. At NYU Shanghai, she is interested in interrogating the place of Southeast Asia within scholarly constructions of Global Asia and the Indian Ocean World.
