The Rohingya Crisis: A Window to Understand Post/Colonial Asia

Chiara Formichi

Venue: Room 1505, 1555 Century Avenue, NYU Shanghai
Date: Monday, November 20, 2017
Time: 16:30 to 18:00 CST

In recent years we have witnessed what has been labelled ā€œthe Rohingya crisisā€, referring to the thousands of Muslims who are suffering persecution in Burma/Myanmar because of their unclear official status as citizens. Besides the magnitude of the humanitarian crisis, what do these events teach us about the history of Asia? In this lecture, the following issues will be touched upon: the history of the Islamization of South and Southeast Asia; British colonial labour policies; borders and nation-making; and identity politics in post/colonial times.Ā

Dr.Ā ChiaraĀ FormichiĀ is Assistant Professor in the Department of Asian Studies at Cornell University. Trained in Islamic studies (University of Rome, Italy) and the history of Southeast AsiaĀ School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) University of London,Ā Dr.Ā FormichiĀ focuses on Islam as a lived religion and as a political ideology in 20th-century Indonesia and Southeast Asia more broadly. As such, her interests lie at the disciplinary intersection between Islamic Studies, History, and Area Studies, methodologically resting on archival research as well as ethnography. Her current research has two foci: first, she is pursuing a comparative study of the historical genesis and contemporary status of minorities in Southeast Asia (Burma/Myanmar, Hong Kong, Malaya and Singapore). Second, she is delving into the disciplinary relation between Asian Studies and Islamic Studies.
